Expanding the Student Accommodation Pilot

In December 2023, NSFAS took a pivotal decision to expand its Student Accommodation Pilot, encompassing additional institutions across the country. This expansion entails the participation of 23 Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges and 17 universities in the accreditation processes for private student accommodation.

Engagement and Collaboration Efforts

NSFAS has prioritized engagement with various stakeholders, including institutions and key organizations like SAPCO, USAf, SATVETSA, and SAUS. Through extensive communication efforts conducted in December 2024 and January 2024, NSFAS aimed to foster collaboration and consultation tailored to the unique needs and capacities of each institution.

Accreditation Progress

Of the total beds registered, NSFAS has successfully accredited and made available 32,272 beds in TVET colleges and 47,150 beds in universities for registered NSFAS-funded students. Role of Solution Partners and Accrediting Agents

NSFAS has appointed Four Solution/Portal Partners and 39 Accrediting Agents to facilitate the application and placement process. Despite initial challenges, including delays and payment issues, NSFAS has addressed these obstacles to ensure smooth operations.

Institutions have played a crucial role in the onboarding process, collaborating with NSFAS to prioritize student accommodation. They have assisted in confirming registration data, allocating students, and providing essential support throughout the implementation phase.

NSFAS has actively engaged with hotspot institutions, such as Buffalo City TVET College and Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), to address accommodation challenges. Efforts at Buffalo City TVET College have resulted in accommodating 732 out of 900 NSFAS beneficiaries in accredited private accommodation.

While CPUT requested exemption from the 2024 pilot project, NSFAS remains committed to working with the university and student leaders to find solutions to accommodation challenges. The aim is to ensure that all students have access to safe, decent, and conducive accommodation.

Continued Support and Transparency

NSFAS pledges continued support to institutions and students through weekly training sessions for accommodation providers and students until the end of February 2024. Moreover, NSFAS remains committed to transparency by providing viewing rights to student portals and day-to-day operating rights to Accommodation Providers (APs).
