Khosa Is on Special Leave Amid a Kickback Scandal at NSFAS

Khosa Is on Special Leave Amid a Kickback Scandal at NSFAS. Amid mounting calls for his resignation over corruption allegations, National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) board chairperson Ernest Khosa has voluntarily taken special leave.

Corruption Allegations Under Investigation

NSFAS spokesperson Ishmael Mnisi revealed that Khosa requested the board to place him on special leave while it investigates the corruption allegations against him. This decision was made during a board meeting held ahead of the scheduled meeting with Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Innovation Blade Nzimande. Minister Nzimande was promptly informed and approved Khosa’s special leave.

Board Response to the Leave

Khosa, who denies any financial wrongdoing, informed the board about the potential impact of the allegations on NSFAS and its beneficiaries, citing threats to his life and his family. The NSFAS board, acknowledging Khosa concerns, welcomed his decision to take a leave of absence.

Intensified Calls for Resignation

Calls for the resignation of both Khosa and Minister Nzimande gained momentum after the Organisation for Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa) published recordings alleging kickbacks involving Khosa and a service provider representative. Outa claims that millions were paid in kickbacks to Nzimande, Khosa, and the South African Communist Party (SACP) for tenders and protection for service providers.

Denials and Commitment to Investigation

Minister Nzimande has vehemently denied any involvement in corruption, expressing his commitment to subjecting himself to necessary investigations to prove his innocence.

Leave of Absence Not an Admission of Guilt

NSFAS emphasized that Khosa’s special leave should not be interpreted as an admission of guilt but as a responsible act to facilitate a thorough investigation by the board. The board reiterated its commitment to promoting good corporate governance, transparency, and accountability.

The NSFAS board aims to uphold integrity and transparency by ensuring a comprehensive and unbiased investigation into the allegations against its chairperson, Ernest Khosa.
