NSFAS Urges Students to Report Abuse Exploitation by Landlords

NSFAS Urges Students to Report Abuse Exploitation by Landlords. The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has issued a strong call to students, urging them to report any cases of exploitation or abuse by landlords. This follows an investigation into disturbing allegations that some landlords have been demanding sexual favors in exchange for student accommodation.
NSFAS Investigates Disturbing Allegations
The issue of student accommodation challenges has been a growing concern in South Africa. Last week, Higher Education Minister Nobuhle Nkabane assured the public that authorities are actively addressing these matters. The controversy intensified after a Sunday World article, published on February 16, 2025, exposed reports of unscrupulous landlords exploiting vulnerable students.
In response, NSFAS, the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), and Thekwini TVET College launched a joint investigation into these claims. However, NSFAS reported difficulties in verifying the allegations. The student mentioned in the article was not registered at Thekwini TVET College, making it difficult to provide support or confirm the authenticity of the incident.
Challenges in Reporting and Call for Action
Despite multiple calls for victims to come forward, no official cases have been reported to the South African Police Service (SAPS) so far. NSFAS has stressed the importance of filing police reports and sharing case numbers to ensure proper legal action against perpetrators.
“Should further credible information come forward, NSFAS will reopen the investigation to ensure appropriate action is taken,” the organization stated.
NSFAS Takes a Firm Stand Against Exploitation
NSFAS has reaffirmed its zero-tolerance policy towards exploitation, harassment, and gender-based violence. The organization warned that any landlords found guilty of misconduct will face blacklisting and termination of their NSFAS accreditation.
Speaking at a media briefing at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) Westville Campus, NSFAS Administrator Freeman Nomvalo emphasized the need for student leaders to support victims in reporting incidents. He also highlighted that victims could receive counseling and other necessary interventions if required.
How Students Can Report Abuse
Students who experience any form of exploitation or abuse related to their accommodation are urged to take the following steps:
- Report the incident to SAPS and obtain an official case number.
- Notify NSFAS by sending details, including the case number, to [email protected] for further action.
Call for Student Safety and Justice
NSFAS remains committed to ensuring student safety and holding those responsible for misconduct accountable. The organization strongly condemns any form of abuse, exploitation, or gender-based violence and encourages students to speak up and seek justice.
