SASSA March Old-Age Grants Can Be Found Here
SASSA March Old-Age Grants Can Be Found Here. In March 2024, SASSA (South African Social Security Agency) Old-Age Grants are set to be disbursed on Tuesday, 5 March. This pivotal support for the elderly comes amidst growing concerns about the adequacy of these grants.
A recent report from the University of Cape Town shed light on the stark reality that these grants often fall short of meeting the basic needs of beneficiaries.
The report, detailed by The South African last month, revealed distressing statistics. With over 4 million beneficiaries relying on SASSA aid, many are supporting households of five or more individuals.
Astonishingly, the average household income in these situations barely scrapes by at R6,850, translating to a mere R1,370 per person.
Understanding The Impact
The implications are profound. The stipend provided by SASSA, ranging from R2,090 for individuals aged 60 to 74, and R2,110 for those 75 and older, not only sustains the elderly but also supports several dependents. However, the inadequacy of these grants often forces beneficiaries to forgo essential healthcare and chronic medication, exacerbating their already precarious situation.
Elderly individuals are particularly susceptible to various health challenges, including diabetes, hypertension, arthritis, and sensory, mobility, and cognitive impairments. Research indicates that pensioners without access to SASSA Old-Age Grants are at heightened risk of developing illnesses with potentially severe consequences later in life.
Applying For An Old-Age Grant
If you or a loved one are eligible for an Old-Age Grant, the application process is accessible through SASSA branches. Essential documents include a 13-digit bar-coded identity document, proof of marital status, residence, income, assets, and relevant financial statements. Additionally, a certified copy of your will and discharge certificates may be required.
In cases where applicants are unable to visit the office due to health reasons, a designated person can apply on their behalf with proper authorization. All documentation must be certified by a commissioner of oaths, and the application forms completed under the supervision of a SASSA officer.
Income And Asset Limitations
It’s important to note the income and asset limitations to qualify for the March 2024 SASSA Old-Age Grants:
- Single individuals must not earn more than R8,070 per month (R96,840 per year).
- For married couples, the total income threshold is R16,140 per month (R193,680 per year).
- Asset declarations must not exceed R1,372,800 for single individuals and R2,745,600 for married couples.
Payment Schedule
Beneficiaries can expect March 2024 SASSA Old-Age Grants to be disbursed according to the following schedule:
- Tuesday, 5 March 2024.
- Wednesday, 3 April 2024.
- Friday, 3 May 2024.
- Monday, 3 June 2024.
- Tuesday, 2 July 2024.
- Friday, 2 August 2024.
- Tuesday, 3 September 2024.
It’s important to note that there might be a delay of 2-3 days for the grants to reflect in the bank accounts. Additionally, dates from May 2024 onwards are subject to confirmation from SASSA.
Conclusion
While SASSA Old-Age Grants provide vital support for vulnerable individuals, the current stipends often fall short of meeting basic needs. Efforts to address these shortcomings are crucial to ensure the well-being of South Africa’s elderly population.
