SASSA Recipients March on Limpopo Premier Office in Protest

SASSA Recipients March on Limpopo Premier Office in Protest. Disgruntled social grant recipients in Limpopo are gearing up to march to the office of Premier Stanley Mathabatha today. The move comes amidst escalating tensions following the decision by the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) and Post-Bank to close all physical cash points in the province.

The Limpopo Pay-Point Organisation, spearheading the protest, asserts that the closure of these cash points will disproportionately affect vulnerable members of society, particularly the elderly and self-employed individuals who relied on them for financial transactions.

Demands and Concerns

Chairperson of the Limpopo Pay-Point Organisation, Noko Motibane, emphasized the urgency of their demands. “We want the Premier to forward our memorandum of demands to the President,” Motibane stated. Among their primary concerns is the impact of the closure on elderly citizens and self-employed vendors who heavily depended on these cash points for their livelihoods.

Call for Resolution

Motibane stressed the importance of immediate action, urging Minister of Social Development Lindiwe Zulu to convene a meeting to address the grievances raised by the affected parties. “This affects old ladies and self-employed workers who used to sell at the pay points. But now, since they have closed them, old people are suffering,” Motibane lamented.

Conclusion

The impending march to the Premier’s office underscores the growing discontent among social grant recipients in Limpopo. Their demand for the reversal of the decision to close physical cash points highlights the critical need for policymakers to consider the welfare of vulnerable segments of society in their decision-making processes. As tensions escalate, all eyes are on the authorities to engage constructively and find a resolution that alleviates the hardships faced by affected individuals.
